Hot Work Permits

Hot Work Permits serve as the guideline and ground rules to help reduce the chance of fires occurring at the Des Moines International Airport. The ASI is a living document and may be updated as the need arises throughout any project. Any updates will be discussed with and ratified by management. Hot work is occasionally performed in DMIA facilities. The airport’s Hot Work Permit Program was developed in accordance with OSHA regulations and NFPA recommendations with the goal of preventing hot work fires.

Permit Authorizing Individual (PAI)
The PAI at the DSMIA is the chief electrician, who may be contacted at 515.256.5032

Hot Work Operators (HWOs) are employees and contractors who perform hot work operations. A HWO must always obtain a Hot Work Permit before beginning hot work. Upon notifying the PAI, a meeting will be arranged to look at the worksite and based on the findings of the PAI a Hot Work Permit will be either issued or denied. The Hot Work Permit may be issued with specific guidelines which will outline the safety precautions the contractor will need to take in order for the HWP to be valid.

A Hot Work Permit must be completed by the PAI and not the employee or contractor performing the work.
